What we did with it
Every page of every site we run comes out of this: about 80 sites, one small program, and KV holding the files. The page you are reading is one of them. Our bill for hosting them, since we started in October 2026, is $0.
Our sites are new and quiet, so this says nothing yet about a busy one.
The good
- It has cost us nothing. We set out to host for free and have not paid for hosting yet. The published free limits are 100,000 requests a day and 100,000 KV reads a day.
- Publishing takes seconds. Our tool pushes a site's files and the site is live. Pushing the same files twice changes nothing, so a retry is safe.
- HTTPS is included.Every domain got its certificate without us doing anything, after a short wait.
The catch
- 1,000 writes a day is the real ceiling. The free KV store allows 1,000 writes a day, and every new or changed file is a write. Visitors are not what we plan around. A big night of publishing is.
- A new domain's HTTPS comes late.Right after a domain went active, plain HTTP answered and HTTPS failed for about six minutes while the certificate was made. It looks broken. It is not. Wait and try again.
- Adding a domain can bring old records with it.Cloudflare's scan copies the DNS records it finds. One of ours came in still pointing at a registrar's parking page. Read every record after adding a name.
- New domains have a speed limit. We ran into about 25 new domains every 10 minutes. This only matters if you move many at once, as we did.
